1939 – Birth of
Michael Werner in Nauen, near Berlin Germany.
1958 – Works at the
Rudolf Springer gallery in Berlin.
1962 – Discovers
and is greatly moved by the work of Jean
Fautrier on a visit to Paris in the company of Georg Baselitz.
1963 – Opens with
Benjamin Katz, the Werner & Katz gallery on the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin.
First exhibition of
the works of Georg Baselitz. The
show accused of shocking public morals is closed by the authorities and
« Die große Nacht
im Eimer » (today in the Ludwig museum in Cologne) confiscated.
1964 – Opening of
Michael Werner’s personal gallery -
« First Orthodox Salon» - in an old coal warehouse in Berlin. Werner
represents Markus Lüpertz and A.R Penck.
1968 – Michael
Werner moves the gallery to Cologne.
1969 – First

Werner introduces his German artists to the USA in collaboration with Ileana
Sonnabend, Xavier Fourcade, and at last Mary Boone, in New York. Beginning of the publication of the art review KRATER +
WOLKE (8 numbers to this day).
1990 – Opening of
Michael Werner’s New York gallery in the Upper East Side.
2009 – Opening of
an administrative branch of the gallery in Berlin on Märkisch Wilmersdorf.
2012 – Werner
donates more than 100 works from his personal collection to the Musée d’art
moderne de la ville de Paris on the 50th anniversary of his first
visit to the museum, which first inspired him to become involved with modern
art.
