Thursday 2 October: Marais III – From the square du Temple to the hotel de Soubise.
Our third tour will begin at the former site of the Templars’ castle in Paris which was also used as a prison for the royal family during the French Revolution. The hotels Sale (now the Picasso museum) Bruant and Soubise are the finest examples of monumental residential architecture from the age of Louis XIV in the Marais. The church of Saint-Denis is a typically severe yet elegant example of neoclassical 19c architecture housing a very moving Pieta by the great Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix. The tour will end with the splendid Rococo apartments of the princesse de Soubise, the best décor of the Louis XV period open to the public in Paris.
