Thursday 18 September: Marais II – From Saint-Paul to the hotel de Sully.
In our second tour of the Marais we will take in the central part of the district just north of the rue Saint-Antoine. Some of the greatest hotel particuliers of the Renaissance and Baroque eras are situated here: Lamoignon, Carnavalet, Sully as is also Paris’ first planned royal square, the place des Vosges built by King Henri IV in 1606-12. This was also at the beginning of the 20th century one of Paris’ major Jewish districts with its center at the rue des Rosiers. The orthodox synagogue on rue Pavee is by the great art nouveau architect Hector Guimard.
