The Marais is today defined by the borders of the 3rd and 4th arrondissemsents and was from the early 1500’s to the 18th century one Paris’ most aristocratic districts. In this first visit we will take in the southern portion of the district between the rue Saint-Antoine and the Seine. We will visit the site of the former Bastille fortress and prison and of the Paris Arsenal next to it and evoke their history during and after the French Revolution.  We will examine the historic hotels particuliers and houses from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods: the hotels de Sens, d’Aumont, Beuvais, Chalons de Luxembourg. We will end our tour in the oldest part of the Marais, the Monceau Saint-Gervais, where its first church, Saint Gervais-Saint Protais, was built. One of the least visited historic Paris churches it is a masterpiece of late Gothic and early Baroque architecture.
